How Long Does Almond Milk Last? Here’s What You Need to Know

Published: Oct 8, 2025 by The Natural Natalie · This post may contain affiliate links ·

So you want to know how long does almond milk last?

The short answer… it depends!!!

Almond milk brand, sugar content, water to almond ratio, homemade versus store bought etc. It all matters and it all will all point to how long it will last in the fridge.

Why This Matters (And Why “how long does almond milk last” is a key question)

Have you ever made homemade almond milk and it is so delicious on day 1 and day 2, but then by day 3 it starts to thicken and smell disgusting?

You might wonder “is this still good?”

It is so disappointing when this happens because there is a good amount of love and care that goes into making a fresh batch of nut milk

Because plant milks don’t always give obvious signs of spoilage, it’s easy to misjudge (if there is no strong odor).

In this article, I’ll combine my personal experience, research, and best practices to answer how long almond milk lasts (in different forms), how to spot spoilage, and tips to make it last longer.

Different Types of Almond Milk & Their Lifespans

How long almond milk lasts depends heavily on which type it is and how it’s stored. Let’s break down the most common categories:

1. Shelf-Stable (Unopened) Almond Milk

This is the almond milk in aseptic cartons (the milk you find in the unrefrigerated section) that you find on non-refrigerated shelves.

  • Unopened: Can last 1 to 12+ months (depending on brand and processing) under cool, dark, stable conditions. My suggestion is to just look at the “best by” date and go with that.
  • Opened: Once opened, it must go into the fridge and is best used within 7–10 days (some sources say up to 10–14 days).

2. Refrigerated Store-Bought Almond Milk

This type is already kept in the refrigerated section in the store. (usually all the way in the back of the store, so you have to walk through the entire store just to get your milk).

  • Unopened: Typically lasts until or slightly past the “best by” date printed on the container.
  • Opened: Once opened, ideally consume within 7 days (some sources extend to 10 day, your call).

3. Homemade Almond Milk

This is the kind you make yourself (soaking and blending almonds, straining, etc.). This my favorite method!!! It is so cost-effective and it can be very meditative (if you don’t have a crazy to-do list that day).

  • Since I am sure you are not using preservatives or ultra-pasteurization in your homemade nut milk, you have to expect a shorter life in the fridge. In my experience, homemade nut milk with more water last up to 7 days while less water and more nuts lasts 3 to 5 days.
  • The good news is, my homemade nut milk is soooo tasty that I usually drink it in 2 days LOL. Here is a link to my recipe if you want to check it out!

My Experience: What I’ve Noticed

When I began making my own almond milk, I learned some lessons the hard way:

  • Even with very clean jars (this one on amazon is so cute!), the 5th day is often the limit.
    • After the 5th day, it is usually game over because the flavor starts to degrade.
  • Some store-bought shelf-stable cartons I’ve opened late (a few days past “best by”) still smelled okay, but I resisted using them, because better safe than sorry.
    • (my boyfriend would say otherwise. he likes to live on the edge lol).
  • I found that shaking and tasting a little (with caution) helps. This step is only for the brave.
    • If it smells sour, tastes “off,” or has thick clumps, I toss it immediately.

Signs That Almond Milk Has Gone Bad

Even if the timeline suggests it’s still okay, your senses are your best defense. Here’s what to check:

IndicatorWhat to Look ForWhat It Suggests
Smell A sour, “wet cardboard,” paint-thinner, or funky smellLikely spoiled
Appearance & TextureClumps, thick consistency after shaking, separation that doesn’t resolveBad sign (though mild separation can occur naturally)
Carton & ContainerPuffiness, swelling, bloating of packagingGas from microbes → discard (GROSS)
TasteOff, sour, “off-balanced” flavorIf you taste it and it’s off, please just don’t risk it

If you see any one of these, play it safe and throw it out!!!!

Maximizing Freshness: Storage & Handling Tips

Here are the best practices I follow (and recommend) to extend how long almond milk lasts:

  1. Keep it cold (obviously)
  2. Clean jars only (make sure you use a clean glass jar when you make it at home!)
  3. Seal tightly (again another obvious one)
  4. Avoid temperature swings (leaving it on the counter for 2 hours or forgetting to close the fridge)
  5. Shake before pouring
  6. Freeze in portions (if needed!)

Final Thoughts & Safety Notes

So, how long does almond milk last? It depends on the type and method to make the almond milk.

Always use your senses!! If in doubt, discard. It’s better to waste a bit than to risk getting sick.
